Artist Research George Segal
Artist research George Segal text:
I have chosen to study the works of George Segal as I am very inspired by the life size scale of his sculpture pieces. I feel that I would like to incorporate Segal's use of mod-roc and plaster materials within the sculptural part of my final major piece as I feel that these materials would create a textured base for the bone elements in preparation for the application of textured marks. Unlike Segal, I am planning to apply a layer of acrylic paint to my sculpture to create a sense of texture and variations of tone similar to those that I have studied from life. Segal's use of orthopaedic bandages dipped in plaster technique relates to my own personal spinal surgery and title of my project 'Orthopaedic Cage', so I feel that I may experiment with bandages in future ideas.
I am particularly inspired by Segal's 'The Asian Picnic' as the piece captures a sense of life within an environment which is further reinforced by the use of lighting in which the shadows create a sense of form and dimension. I feel that I would like to experiment with lighting for my sculptural piece to explore a variety of techniques that I could incorporate in my final major piece to create a sense of depth and contrast and to draw the viewer's eye in the final show. Although, the area that I have chosen is already quite well lit from natural light and is in close proximity to the ceiling lights so I am unsure if any other light sources are required so I will most likely experiment with this upon completion of my spine and ribcage sculpture. I am also very inspired by Segal's 'Woman On White Wicker Rocker' piece as the presentation of a single sculpture in front of a white toned wall is quite striking in terms of contrast and this is how I have planned to present my own sculpture.
I am very inspired by the viewer interaction within Segal's piece 'Three Figures and Four Benches' and the publicity of the sculptures which creates a unique experience for the viewer which I would like to incorporate within my own final major.
